Watch of the Moment: Breitling Navitimer

Our watch of the moment is the Breitling Navitimer series.

Breitling launched the Navitimer series in 1952 with the goal of giving pilots a genuine wrist instrument. According to the Breitling website, the watch is “endowed with a built-in navigation computer, a circular slide rule capable of performing all calculations a flight plan requires.”

That’s EXACTLY why I love this watch and why I bought it – because of the circular slide rule. I can’t tell you how handy a circular slide rule is on a daily basis. Let me walk you through a typical day.

Morning:
Starbucks Barista: “What size coffee would you like, sir?”
Me: “Let me consult my circular slide rule. It says, ‘Grande.’”

Afternoon:
Restaurant Waiter: “Do you want fries or a salad with your sandwich?”
Me: “According to my circular slide rule, those fries are loaded with calories. I’ll have the salad with the dressing on the side.”

Evening:
Supermodel: “Is that a circular slide rule?”
Me: “Yes.”

So clearly I’m kidding. Yes, the Breitling Navitimer is an amazing watch with great technical capabilities. But I love it because it looks amazing. It’s one of the best looking watches I’ve seen. Does that make me shallow? Just checked my circular slide rule – it said, “A little.”
