Celebrity Watches at the “Stand Up To Cancer” Fundraiser

The annual Stand Up to Cancer Hollywood fundraiser / telethon took place over the weekend. Per usual, the event showed an outpouring of charitable support from celebrity A-listers like Taylor Swift, the cast of ABC’s Modern Family, Justin Timberlake, Gwyneth Paltrow, Olympians Missy Franklin and Gabby Douglas. This year’s event raised over $81 million to “bring groundbreaking treatments to patients as quickly as possible, including children battling cancer.”

Aside from just benefitting a wonderful cause, the SU2C benefit turned out to also be a great watch-spotting event for us. It seems that a hot watch was the accessory of choice at the Friday night telethon- from Sofia and Jordana wearing Rolex, to Gwyneth in Baume et Mercier- check out all of our celebrity sightings below:

Celebrities Love the Cartier Ballon Bleu

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, the Cartier Ballon Bleu is a seriously hot watch. If Sofia Vergara, or Julianne Hough weren’t enough to back that up, we’ve added two more starlets to our roster of Ballon Bleu fans.

Hollywood heavyweight Melanie Griffith rocked her Cartier while attending an awards ceremony in Munich last week. Meanwhile, we added another British starlet to our list of celebrity crushes when we spotted Lydia Bright wearing her stainless steel Ballon Bleu to the UK premier of Katy Perry’s new movie, Part of Me. No big deal. One of the hottest female celebrities wearing one of the hottest watches on the market. We were browsing People.com and spotted this gem – Sofia Vergara wearing a gold Rolex Daytona.

Could we be any more in love?

If you remember, Sofia has been spotted wearing another ultra-hot watch: Cartier Ballon Bleu. When it comes to watches, she gets it.

Cartier Says that the Ballon Bleu is its Best Selling Watch

Cartier recently reported that the Ballon Bleu is its best selling watch. That was no surprise. For months we’ve been gushing about how much we love the line. Check out all of our blogs on the Cartier Ballon Bleu.

What was a surprise was Cartier’s explanation of why the line is doing so well. Here is the explanation given by Chief Executive Officer Bernard Fornas: “Bigger watches are losing a bit of ground today. When you are in crisis periods you show off less and you have shapes that are more discreet and more ergonomic. The feel-guilty factor is very important.” Read the entire article here.

I understand that he’s the boss and has access to plenty of consumer research, but I disagree with him. The Ballon Bleu is doing well for two main reasons:
1. It looks amazing.
2. Celebrities are wearing it, giving it more exposure.

If his explanation is true, why did Rolex recently start making larger Datejust models? And why is Audemars Piguet doing so well?

Lilly Ghalichi – Fashion Entrepreneur, Attorney, Watch Lover

We love watches – you know that.

You also know that one of our favorite trends is women wearing oversized watches.

In 2010 we praised Jennifer Aniston. What’s not to love – she’s talented, attractive, likeable, and has a great collection of oversized watches.

In 2011 Tamara Ecclestone and Sofia Vergara were all over eRelyx. Both women love oversized watches (including our absolute favorite, the Cartier Ballon Bleu).

Well, it’s 2012. Who will step up to be our favorite oversized watch-wearing celebrity? While it’s still early, we have a front-runner: Lilly Ghalichi.

Who?

You heard us. Lilly Ghalichi. Okay, so by most standards, she’s not a true celebrity. But why not? Paris Hilton is a celebrity. Kim Kardashian is a celebrity. Heck, Snooki is a celebrity. Admittedly, we stumbled on Lilly as we were browsing PR Photos to find other celebrities wearing watches. But what is stopping Lilly from becoming a celeb? Not much. She’s easy on the eyes – you can be the judge below. She’s smart – she’s a licensed attorney in California!! She’s a budding fashion entrepreneur – her company, Femme Noir Swimgerie, recently merged with Have Faith Swimwear and the joint company will re-launch early this year. She’s not afraid of the spotlight – every room in her house has red carpet (okay, we made that up). She knows the difference between then & than and your & you’re. And the key to becoming a celebrity – she loves amazing watches. In our ‘Twinterview” with Lilly, she claimed, “I love watches. They’re so sexy on men and women.” We couldn’t agree more!

Modern Family

ABC’s hit series, Modern Family, is both heartwarming, hilarious and chock full of watches! While we’d tune in regardless of what the characters are wearing on their wrists… it helps that each new episode features characters, Jay & Gloria (Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara) wearing a new array of pieces from Rolex to Cartier to Bell & Ross and every where in between.

We have some serious wardrobe envy…

Hottest Watches on the Market

Earlier in the year we ran eRelyx Watch Madness – an NCAA-style tournament to crown the hottest watch on the market. The Panera Luminor Marina beat out the IWC Portuguese Chronograph in the finals. (Click the bracket below for a larger version).

We’ll be running another tournament soon. In the meantime, tell us which watches are hot today. Here’s our list, in no particular order:

Panerai Luminor Marina – who are we to argue with you, the readers.

Cartier Ballon Bleu – this watch is on fire! So hard to find pre-owned. And so many celebs are wearing it – Johnny Depp, Tamara Ecclestone, Sofia Vergara, Julianne Hough, Ozzy Osbourne, Adriana Lima, etc. (Click on the celebs’ names to see a picture of them wearing the watch).

IWC Portuguese Chronograph – the runner up from last year. Still very hard to find in great, pre-owned condition. And if you do find one, it won’t come at a big discount to retail.

Rolex Submariner Date or GMT-Master II with Ceramic Bezel – a classic, slightly redesigned. Hard to argue with this legend.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore – a bit edgier. Worn by a ton of celebs in the music and sports world – Jay-Z, Tamara Ecclestone, Novak Djokovic, LeBron James, Justin Timberland, etc. (Click on the celebs’ names to see a picture of them wearing the watch).

IWC Yacht Club – yep, another IWC watch. They know how to make solid, classic, attractive watches. I’ll refrain from adding the Big Pilot, but it could be on the list.

Does Johnny Depp Wear a Cartier Ballon Bleu

I’ll say it again. Cartier Ballon Bleu is one of the hottest watches on the market – for both men and women. For rough and tumble. For prim and proper. Try to find pre-owned models on the market. It’s tough – partly because it’s a relatively new model. Partly because they are so popular.

Here’s another example of a celeb wearing the watch – it’s none other than Johnny Depp. Okay, so it’s tough to tell if that’s actually a Ballon Bleu, but it certainly looks like it. Check him out.

What We’re Watching: Modern Family

Its hard for me to accept that the end of summer is actually here. Even with labor day just around the corner, I remain in denial about the prospect of retiring my shorts and flip-flops in favor of fall’s sweaters and boots. Easing the difficult transition back into shorter days, and cooler nights? Modern Family’s return to TV on September 21st. My Wednesday nights just haven’t been the same with out our little dose of pure, unadulterated television bliss.

At eRelyx, our favorite couple to watch from the show is definitely Jay & Gloria- Both Ed O’Neill & Sofia Vergara are watch lovers in their every day lives and Jay & Gloria also wear some hot watches. Every week, we get a nerdy thrill at trying to ID what brands their characters are wearing. Oh, and also, Sofia Vergara is just ridiculously good-looking. But really, its the watch thing. We swear.

We’ve noticed Cartier’s Ballon Bleu appearing on the wrists of more and more young trendy celebs. The latest in Cartier’s line of watches, the Ballon Bleu design is a recently blogged about obsession here at eRelyx HQ, and apparently the Hollywood elite agree.

In today’s poll we want to know, who rocks the gold Cartier Ballon Bleu best?

Is it the all-american girl-next-door, country singer, dancer (…with the stars), and overall hottie Julianne Hough? Or the sassy & sexy Colombian import- Sofia Vergara? Or perhaps our newest celebutante obsession from across the pond? The british model/media personality/socialite and daughter of Formula One CEO Bernie Ecclestone- Tamara Ecclestone.
