Can You Spot the Counterfeit IWC?

A friend recently traveled to Beijing on a business trip.  While he was there, he took a picture of a $30 “IWC” watch.  Can you spot the differences between the knock-off and the real deal? (Okay – so this one is fairly easy when you compare side by side)

There are several differences.  Some are obvious – like the date.  We won’t spoil the fun for you.  How many other differences can you spot in the pictures?

First is the real deal (below):

IWC Portuguese, IWC, watch

And next is the knock-off (below):

Counterfeit IWC Portuguese

The counterfeit doesn’t look too bad – although the minor differences really add up!!

How many difference can YOU spot?!?!

Commentary on Watch Madness – Round 1

We’re approaching the end of Watch Madness Round 1, so I thought I’d take a moment to comment on the results so far.  Take a look at the results (click to enlarge).  Any surprises?

Watch Madness, eRelyx, Watch Madness 2012, Omega, Rolex, Cartier, Tag Heuer, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Panerai

In the $0-$5,000 bracket, everything seemed to go according to plan.  Both Omegas won their first round match-ups.  I did think that they Baume & Mercier Capeland would fair a bit better – it’s new styling is very popular.  However, it was no match for the power of the Omega brand.

Many people would consider Montblanc’s victory over Tag Heuer an upset – but, Montblanc has been coming on strong in the watch world lately.  People like the big, bold, clean style of their watches.

It will be interesting to see who pulls out the final match-up: Omega Seamaster vs. Breitling SuperOcean Heritage.  Two popular brands, two cool watches.

In the $5,001-$10,000 bracket, everything played out as one would expect.  The IWC Portuguese Chronograph, Panerai Luminor Marina, Breitling Navitimer World, and Rolex Submariner Date are all VERY popular watches.  I thought that the Tag Heuer Monaco Chronograph might have a chance against the Panerai, but last year’s champion pulled it out.  I’m excited to see the results of the second round match-ups.  There are going to be some TOUGH choices.

There was a minor upset in the $10,001-$15,000 bracket where the Cartier Roadster chronograph lost to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso.  Both are great brands, popular, and unique.  I believe that people have a love-hate relationship with the unique shape of the Roadster.  That may have hurt it’s chance for victory.

I’m not surprised that the Rolex Daytona beat the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club – however, the Yacht Club is one of my favorite watches right now.  It’s different.  It’s cool.  It’s harder to find.  And that hint of red really stands out.

The results in the $15,001+ bracket were a bit surprising.  I didn’t expect to see the Patek Philippe Nautilus lose in the first round.  And I was surprised at how handily the Patek Philippe Calatrava beat the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore.  Judging from those results, it looks like the classic, clean styles may do very well in this competition.  The Nautilus, Royal Oak Offshore, and even the Cartier Roadster chronograph are all a bit unique and all lost in the first round.  Seems like the Rolex President should defeat the Hublot Big Bang handily in the last match-up of the bracket.

Round 2 starts on Thursday afternoon.  There will be some very interesting match-ups.  We’re excited to see how things play out.  Click here to stay up to date.

Thanks for voting!!!

Hottest Watches on the Market

Earlier in the year we ran eRelyx Watch Madness – an NCAA-style tournament to crown the hottest watch on the market.  The Panera Luminor Marina beat out the IWC Portuguese Chronograph in the finals.  (Click the bracket below for a larger version).

eRelyx, pre-owned luxury watches, used watches, Panerai, IWC

We’ll be running another tournament soon.  In the meantime, tell us which watches are hot today.  Here’s our list, in no particular order:

Panerai Luminor Marina – who are we to argue with you, the readers.

Panerai, Panerai Luminor Marina, luxury watch, eRelyx

Cartier Ballon Bleu – this watch is on fire!  So hard to find pre-owned.  And so many celebs are wearing it – Johnny Depp, Tamara Ecclestone, Sofia Vergara, Julianne Hough, Ozzy Osbourne, Adriana Lima, etc.  (Click on the celebs’ names to see a picture of them wearing the watch).

Cartier Ballon Bleu, eRelyx, luxury watch

IWC Portuguese Chronograph – the runner up from last year.  Still very hard to find in great, pre-owned condition.  And if you do find one, it won’t come at a big discount to retail.

IWC Portuguese Chronograph, IWC Portuguese, eRelyx

Rolex Submariner Date or GMT-Master II with Ceramic Bezel – a classic, slightly redesigned.  Hard to argue with this legend.

Rolex GMT-Master II, ceramic bezel, eRelyx, pre-owned luxury watch

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore – a bit edgier.  Worn by a ton of celebs in the music and sports world – Jay-Z, Tamara Ecclestone, Novak Djokovic, LeBron James, Justin Timberland, etc.  (Click on the celebs’ names to see a picture of them wearing the watch).

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore, luxury watch, eRelyx

IWC Yacht Club – yep, another IWC watch.  They know how to make solid, classic, attractive watches.  I’ll refrain from adding the Big Pilot, but it could be on the list.

Behind the Scenes of an eRelyx Photoshoot

Saturday August 6 eRelyx had its 5th big photoshoot at Tico Restaurant in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston MA. The latest restaurant venture from chef Michael Schlow, Tico’s incredible space and luxe, latin vibe provided the ideal backdrop to our shoot. We cant say thank you enough to the amazing staff there who were above and beyond wonderful to us. We have to encourage any one in the Boston area to try this one out- Amazing food & sangria to die for (seriously, the best we’ve had in Boston. ever. period.)

Our phenomonal eRelyx model, Krista, returned for the shoot accompanied by (another!) Max- to create pre-owned watch magic! The real stars of the shoot, however (sorry Krista/Max), were  the watches which included some of our personal collection and several currently for sale on eRelyx.com- from Rolex, to Panerai, and IWC for Max and Cartier and Tag Heuer for Krista. It was a highly successful Saturday morning for the eRelyx team and we’re excited about the photos! Keep your eyes out for our future advertisements! In the meantime, enjoy a peek at some of our favorite pictures (& bloopers!) here-

Splurge vs. Save: IWC Portuguese vs. Eterna Soleure

All of our followers know that we’re huge fans of the IWC Portuguese Chronograph line of watches.  It’s the right mix of dressy and sporty.  It’s a chronograph but manages to look simple.  However, with a retail price of $7,400, it’s not exactly cheap.

The Eterna Soleure Moonphase Chronograph is a fantastic alternative.  It looks very similar to the IWC Portuguese Chronograph – plus you get day-date and moonphase complications.  That’s great bang for the buck!!

Check them out side-by-side.  What do you think?  Click on each of the images for more details.

The Most-Wanted Watch on Wall Street

How do the Wall Street elite keep time? Well with IWC, of course. The summer 2010 blockbuster ‘Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps” caught up with the infamous Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) shortly after the crash of the stock market in 2008 and nearly 20 years after his famed “Greed is Good” speech.  While the movie might’ve been a flop compared to the original, we give major props to director Oliver Stone’s attention to detail.

Both of the movie’s leads- Jacob Moore (Shia LeBeouf) and Douglas’ Gekko- wore IWC throughout the film. Gekko wears a Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar watch in rose gold, and the younger Moore sports a Portuguese Perpetual Calendar in 18k white gold, retail value of about $38,800.

Love the IWC but don’t have Gekko’s bank account? eRelyx has several IWC watches in stock ranging in price from $4.5k to $10k- Click here to see what’s available!
