The $5,000 price range is where things really start to get interesting. As I mentioned in a previous post, this price range allows you to consider some of the most well-known watch brands including Rolex, IWC, Panerai, and Cartier. The following are a few of my favorites:
Breitling Navitimer World: This watch is cool and sophisticated and will definitely attract a few looks. At 46mm, it’s definitely not subtle (most watches are around 40mm). And if you’re looking for a simple watch, this one is not for you – it has more functionality than a Swiss Army knife. Of course it requires a Phd to take advantage of all of that functionality (it actually has a circular slide rule).

IWC Portuguese Chronograph: IWC isn’t as well known among the casual watch fans, but it’s an amazing brand that has won many prestigious awards. This particular model is very simple and classic. It will never go out of style – it’ll be passed down from generation to generation.

Panerai Luminor Marina Automatic: Panerai is currently the “it” brand with celebrities and athletes. Unlike some of the other well-known brands, Panerai is very tight with distribution. The good news is that tight distribution means that Panerai watches will hold their value. This particular model is very basic, but is on the chunkier side. If you’re looking for a slimmer watch, then you should probably stick with the IWC Portuguese.

Sothis Horus: This watch gained fame when it graced the cover of Wristwatch Annual 2007. The Sothis Horus, according to its manufacturers, is the first chronograph watch to tell time with only one hand. It’s just a really unique watch – it will surely be the centerpiece of a lot of conversations when it’s on your wrist. This watch is tough to describe – so just check it out and enjoy.
