Monday Mailbag: June 21, 2010

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Dear readers-

I apologize for being so slow to respond to your blog comments.  Things have been very busy over here at the eRelyx headquarters.  The good news is that the eRelyx brand continues to gain recognition.  People all over the world (France, Chile, etc.) love reading our blog about pre-owned luxury watches, entrepreneurship, and celebrities.  And apparently we’re all over the radio waves.  Fantastic.

I wasn’t able to respond to all of your (unedited) comments, but I did have time to address a few.  Please read on.

Comment 1: I like your post. Your blog is fantastic.

Response 1: Thanks Mom.  I appreciate your support…as always.

Comment 2: How many bears does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Response 2: I love jokes.  Do tell!  Wait.  What kind of bears are you talking about?  That has to make a difference, right?  Anyone?

Comment 3: Will a bigger stag hang out with a smaller one during the roar and get the smaller one to go out first to investigate any intruders/ other roars?

Response 3: Wait.  Does this have something to do with the bear joke?  I’m confused.

Comment 4: Boy, that is some high-class web site

Response 4: Thanks.  Although it’s becoming a venue for readers to test out their bear jokes.

Comment 5: Your reviews are pretty informed and valuable. Have you considered writing professionally? Like a periodical or anything?

Response 5: Haha.  Very funny.  Okay people.  Enough with the jokes.

Comment 6: Merci pour votre article très intéressant

Response 6: De rien. Did that make any sense?  Do we have anyone French speakers out there?  I’m pretty sure the reader was thanking me for my very interesting article.  But those of you who know me know that French was my worst subject in high school.

Comment 7: Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!

Response 7: Seriously.  Right?  Apparently I’m all over Google France…so that’s good (tres bien, I think)

Comment 8: I am prepared to suspend my disbelief to take pleasure in a very good show

Response 8: I hope you’ve got plenty of time on your hands.

Comment 9: Which creature inside the morning goes on 4 legs, at mid-day on two, and inside the evening upon 3, and the greater legs it has, the weaker it be?

Response 9: Here we go again.  I don’t know.  Just tell me the answer.  A guy recovering from a hangover who eventually rallies to go out to a club with attractive patrons?

Comment 10: Good post and this fill someone in on helped me alot in my college assignement. Say thank you you as your information.

Response 10: Ummmm.  Good luck in college.  Let me guess – you’re not an English major.

Comment 11: Howdy, your site is on air in the radio! Good job mate. Your posts are truly great and bookmarked. Regards

Response 11: eRelyx has landed.  Before you know it, we’ll be the largest marketplace for authentic pre-owned luxury watches.  Look out world!

Comment 12: Hey quite decent blog!!?! Man .. Attractive .. Wonderful .. I will bookmark your weblog and take the feeds also…

Response 12: Wait.  What’s attractive?  The blog?  Or are you talking about me? The only reason is because at one point in my life I tried to model.  Turns out I wasn’t good looking enough.  But, your words have given me hope.  If eRelyx doesn’t pan out, I may give the modeling thing a run again.

Comment 13: In case you have to try and do it, you may at the same time take action appropriate

Response 13: How did you know I was thinking about modeling again?  It literally entered my mind as a possibility five minutes ago.  And if by “action” you mean “plastic surgery” you can forget about it. (I’m an entrepreneur – I don’t have that kind of money).

Is Entourage the Best Show on TV?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

It’s almost time for the new season of Entourage.  Finally.  It must be one of the best shows on TV, right (along with Friday Night Lights)?

There are so many things to love.

1.  Kevin Dillon does an amazing job playing the painful Johnny Drama.  I love and hate him at the same time.

2. The “entourage” lives a life that we all envy in one way or another – they have money, fame, girls, cars, and plenty of time to sit around and just hang out with each other.

3. Emmanuelle Chriqui.

4. It’s on HBO.

5. Perrey Reeves.  She does an amazing job playing Ari’s strong, confident (and great looking) wife.

6. Jeremy Piven.  He does  a great job of playing a ruthless agent / boss / husband Ari Gold.  Plus, he wears amazing luxury watches.  Tune in to check out what he’s wearing this season (and if you don’t have HBO, I’ll keep you informed).

What’s your favorite part of Entourage?  Stay tuned for more posts as the Entourage season unfolds.

Put Away Your Luxury Watches

Friday, June 18th, 2010

(© BP p.l.c.)

Dear Tony Hayward (BP CEO)-

It’s time to put away your big fancy luxury watches.  Why?  There are several reasons.  Here are two:

1. It makes you seem out of touch with the countless victims of the BP oil disaster.  When you visit the victims, they want to know that you’re willing to roll up your sleeves, get dirty, and help with the cleanup.  I’ve seen you roll up your sleeves on site, but only because it was hot (Louisiana summer and biting questions from reporters).  I’m not the only one to notice – @kevinmeyers recently tweeted: “Have you seen the CEO of BP’s giant watch? Screams “out of touch rich guy.” Why hasn’t a PR flack told him to ditch it?”

2. Time?  You want to know what time it is?  It’s time to get your act together and FIX IT!  After you FIX IT, you can start wearing a watch again.  Until then, take off your watch and FIX IT!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

eRelyx

Show Off Your Watch

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Unless I’m wearing a suit, I roll up the sleeves on my dress shirts.  One of the reasons is that a couple of my watches are too large to fit underneath the shirt cuff.  The other reason is because I like my watch to be visible.

What if you don’t like rolling up your sleeves?  Well, The CEO Shirt Company has a solution for you – the Shirt-Timepiece.  Check it out and let me hear your comments!

Here’s the marketing pitch:

Why wear our distinctive Shirt-Timepiece®?

  • It presents your unique personality and sophisticated tastes to the world.
  • Covering a beautiful watch with your cuff is akin to covering a Monet painting with a sheet.
  • The Shirt-Timepiece® will accommodate virtually every size/style watch you own and all bands (straps or singular gold/silver/metal).
  • Our special shirt design helps prevent light rashes and sores caused by the watch/watchband coming into contact with your skin.
  • To check the time, you no longer have to pull up your sleeve. Your watch will always be in clear view for “everyone” to see.
    Stop hiding your classic timepieces!
  • Our patent will give you exclusivity and insure the quality of our brand, “The Shirt-Timepiece®”. Copies and pirating will not be permitted. All violators to our design will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Luxury Watches Are Relatively Inexpensive

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Most people would never consider buying a $6,000 luxury watch.  I don’t blame them.  You could buy a lot of great stuff with that money – a killer home entertainment system with all the bells and whistles, a used car, 12 shares of Google stock, etc.  However, I bet that a large percentage of the folks who would never consider a $6,000 watch have no problem plunking down $75 for a dress shirt.  So what’s my point?  My point is that a $75 dress shirt may be more expensive than a $6,000 watch on a per-wear basis.  Here’s my logic:

A dress shirt costs $75 and will last about two years before it’s out of style, has stained armpits, or develops a rip in the sleeve (it happens).  An average guy has at least 15 dress shirts in his closet, so let’s assume that the dress shirt is worn every three weeks.  If the shirt is worn every three weeks for two years, that’s about 35 wears.  If you do the math, that’s $2.14 per wear.

A Rolex Submariner costs $6,000.  Let’s assume that you keep the watch for five years and then sell it.  I would argue that you could get around $3,500 for the watch, so the net cost ends up being $2,500 over the five year period.  Let’s assume that you wear the watch 300 days per year, or 1,500 times over the entire period.  If you do the math, that’s $1.67 per wear (less than a Starbucks coffee).

So there you go.  A $6,000 watch is less expensive than a $75 dress shirt.  Okay – I realize that people aren’t making that trade-off.   You’d really need to give up your entire collection of dress shirts for five years to make the trade-off work – “I’m just going to wear undershirts to the office and spice them up with my Rolex.  Hopefully no one will notice.”  Probably won’t fly.  You need shirts.  You don’t need a watch (that was painful to write).

(Btw, the economics are even more attractive if you buy a pre-owned watch from a site like eRelyx)

Do All Musicians Love Watches?

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Is it just me, or are luxury watches getting bigger and bigger?  I get the sense that most manufacturers have increased their production of large, bold watches.  The move by watch manufacturers is likely in response to the latest (okay, they’re not that new) style trends.  Men are wearing 44mm-47mm watches by Panerai (Luminor Marina), Bretiling (Navitimer World), and Oris (Divers Small Second, Date).  Women are wearing men’s watches.  And young babies are wearing women’s watches (okay, I’m speculating).

No where is the large watch trend more obvious than the world of music – specifically Hip-hop, Rap, R&B, and Pop.  Check out the watches worn by some of the world’s most well-known musicians.  Not only are they huge, but they’re loaded with jewels as well.   Enjoy.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Rocks a Panerai

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

As I was watching a replay of the MTV Movie Awards I noticed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was rocking a Panerai.  Normally, the 44mm Panerai makes a wrist look small.  Not the case with Johnson.  He makes a Panerai look like a normal-sized watch.  When I wear mine it looks like I strapped a wall clock to my wrist.  Oh well.  Check out The Rock’s watch.

And by the way – what was Shaun White wearing?

What can we learn from AT&T’s recent marketing blunder?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

There has been a lot of chatter over AT&T’s new mobile data pricing adjustments.  For those of you who haven’t heard, AT&T will be doing away with its $30 unlimited data plan in favor of two capped data plans (Listen up prospective iPhone and iPad owners). One plan is $15/month for up to 200MB and the other plan is $25/month for up to 2GB of data.  Those who currently have the $30/month unlimited data plan will be allowed to continue with that plan.  New users must choose one of the new capped plans. (How much would you pay for unlimited data?  Please take this 5 question survey.)

AT&T claimed that this was a great move for the vast majority of its customers.  They claimed that it would save most of its customers money.  They also claimed that only a small percentage of users actually went over the 2GB level.  However, a lot of people were upset by the move.  Many people felt that the move was made to reduce traffic on AT&T’s oft-criticized network, not to help customers save a few bucks.  People also criticized AT&T because their data stats were backward-looking.  2GB of data might seem like a lot today, but mobile innovation moves at the speed of light – 2GBs will be used up in an instant with mobile Netflix, video chat, etc.  What will AT&T say then?  “These plans are great for 12% of our customers!!”

AT&T will still continue to do well given its exclusive relationship with Apple.  However, in my opinion, the made a few mistakes along the way.  Here’s where I think they goofed:

1. Telling customers that this move was a good thing!  I’m calling BS on that one.  Why not continue to offer the unlimited plan on top of the two capped plans?  How about $15/month for 200MB, $25/month for 2GB, and $40/month for unlimited?  More choices = a good thing for customers.  Don’t tell us what is and what isn’t good for us.  Shame on you, AT&T.  We see right through you.  Lesson = don’t talk to your customers like they’re idiots.  Customers are smart.  They’ll figure out the truth behind your marketing messages.

2. Offending your most influential customers!  Which customers do you think are most vocal?  The customers that use your product the most, right?  I bet that the people churning through bytes and bytes of data (the ones AT&T is looking to thwart) are constantly on CNET and engadget talking about the amazing benefits of their mobile devices.  Now, those same customers are going to be ticked off.  And rest assured, they’re going to tell anyone who will listen.  And with twitter and blogs, they are going to be heard.  What’s the lesson?  Treat your best customers well – they’re likely your most vocal and influential customers.  How could AT&T have handled this?  Simple, add the unlimited data plan and increase its price.  If customers love it so much, they’ll be willing to pay a bit more for it. (Or even better – why not ask them what they think about proposed changes before making them)

3. Their timing was terrible.  Why?  Two reasons: Verizon and Sprint just launched two amazing iPhone competitors – Verizon’s HTC Incredible and Sprint’s HTC EVO.  Both have gotten rave reviews.  Not to mention that Sprint’s phone works on its 4G network.  Anyone on the fence will opt for one of those phones.  Second, Apple just announced its new iPhone 4.  Why not wait until after the iPhone 4 had been out for a few weeks?  The early adopters (who are also the most vocal customers) would have been grandfathered into the $30/month unlimited plan.  There’s no doubt that AT&T will lose customers to Sprint and Verizon after this move.  Will the iPhone flop?  Of course not.  However, as soon as the iPhone is released to Verizon, there will be rough times ahead for AT&T (for all of you investors out there, buy VZ and short T).

I think the bottom line here is AT&T’s network is having issues (nothing new to report there) and they were terrified of the backlash that would have come along with mass adoption of iPads and iPhone 4s.  As a result, they needed to impose caps on their customers ASAP.  However, I think they handled things terribly.  Fortunately Apple will help keep them afloat.  But AT&T should definitely learn from their mistakes on this one.

How much would you pay for unlimited data?  Please take this 5 question survey.

Catering to the Younger Generation

Monday, June 7th, 2010

While Jennifer Aniston is the perfect spokesperson for eRelyx, I can’t put all of my eggs into one basket.  Why?  Because there’s a small chance that she’ll ask eRelyx for too much money or she’ll be too busy with all of her other activities.  I need to come up with a backup plan if she doesn’t come through.  Check out the options below:

Tom Brady and Gisele (Photo by PR Photos)

Maybe I should find the perfect guy to be my spokesperson.  Tom Brady would be an amazing choice, but he already backs Movado, so he might not be able to back eRelyx (even though they’re a manufacturer and eRelyx is a retailer).  But Brady would be amazing.  He’s loved by men and women.  And Gisele is always by his side.  Perfect.

David Beckham (Photo by PR Photos)

Jeremy Piven (Photo by PR Photos)

Orlando Bloom (Photo by PR Photos)

But if Brady doesn’t work out, what other guys would be willing to back my pre-owned luxury watch business?  David Beckham, Jeremy Piven, or Orlando Bloom might be good choices.  They’re all cool, recognizable, and love watches.

Justin Bieber (Photo by PR Photos)

Will Shadley (Photo by PR Photos)

Or maybe I should cater to the younger population.  Justin Bieber is the obvious choice, but he seems to prefer Casio G-Shock watches to luxury watches.  If I have to select a younger spokesperson,  I’m going to to with Will Shadley.  Don’t know Will Shadley?  I didn’t either until I saw him wearing that HUGE watch.  When you wear watches like that, you’re going to get noticed.  I’m not a talent agent, but I know that Will Shadley is going to be a huge success.  Let’s support this talented young thespian by buying or renting his latest film, The Spy Next Door.  Will, if (when) you read this, shoot me an email and we’ll figure out a way to work together.  Sure, your friends are probably a bit too young to be buying luxury watches, but nothing wrong with preparing for the future.

Great Watches for Under $1,000

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Most of my time has been devoted to very expensive watches.  I know that not everyone wants to drop five grand on a watch.  Just recently, a friend asked me for a few more reasonable suggestions.  So, this week I’ll be taking a look at my three favorite watches for under $1,000 (I know, still expensive).

If you’re looking for a very sporty watch that you want everyone to notice, check out the Suunto Core Aluminum watch.  At 49mm, it’s huge.  It’s size combined with its great looks grabs everyone’s attention.  And with this watch, it’s not all about size and good looks – it has a ton of functionality: compass, altimeter with logbook, barometer with trend indicator and storm alarms, sunset and sunrise times and thermometer.  I would kind of feel awkard owning it and wearing it in the city – you need to take this thing camping or hiking.  At around $400-$500, you’ll have money left over for a tent and some hiking boots.

I’ve always been a fan of Swiss Army watches.  When I was growing up, this was my favorite watch brand.  I think Victorinox does a great job combining fashion and sport – this watch could be worn to the office or out to the bar.  I think it looks as good as most of the Tag Heuer watches, but doesn’t come with the hefty price tag.  You can snag this one for around $500.

And speaking of Tag Heuer, the Formula 1 is a cool, sporty option for under $1,000.  Its plastic bezel make is less office-appropriate, but it’s perfect for jeans and a t-shirt.  Sporty, yet upscale.  Plus, there are some cool color options with this watch – white, blue, red, etc. (Apparently it’s good for the 4th of July too).

What watches do you like for under $1000?
